Corner hopes patience pays off

Bryce Jones doesn't have an offer from Boston College but it has been well documented that he is near the top of the Eagles' recruiting board among the cornerback prospects on the radar.

Jones, a 5-foot-11, 160-pound athlete from Cleveland Heights (Ohio), does a little bit of everything for his high school team.

This fall Jones rarely came off the field except in blowout wins. He was the team's quarterback, a starting cornerback, the punter and a holder on special teams as well. As you might imagine, his conditioning is off the charts and all that game action has given him great experience and maturity, plus a knowledge of the game that most guys just don't have at the high school level.

While Jones has demonstrated his ability to play at numerous positions every school still after him likes him as a corner.

"I'm still hearing from Air Force, Boston College, Northern Illinois, UMass and Akron," Jones told EagleAction.com over the weekend.

Air Force and Army are the two schools that have offered so far. For now three schools are at the front of his mind and Boston College is one of them.

"I've talked to Coach (Ben) Sirmans but I've also talked to the defensive backs coach and a couple of weeks ago I had a conversation with Coach Spaz," he explained.

"They told me they have to figure out what guys are going to do about their fifth year seasons and who's going to apply for a medical waver. They said they would let me know after the new year. Right now it's a dead period so they'll get in contact with me when they can.

"I would say Boston College is definitely number one or two. I love everything they have to offer football-wise and educationally."

Jones has never visited BC but said he hopes to take all of his officials during January when he hears back from more schools.

Who else is at the top of his list?

"I'd put Air Force and and Northern Illinois in my top three, too," he said.

While some prospects might think twice about attending a service academy because of the commitments involved, Air Force is an attractive play to Jones.

"I have a brother that went to a military-based school so that's not really a problem for me," he said. "It does provide you with everything you need during and after school, in business and in life. That's one reason I like them. I also like them because they play good football. That's another reason they're high on my list."

At quarterback this year Jones passed for 1,300 yards and 13 scores while rushing for six more touchdowns. Defensively he registered 30 tackles with two interceptions and eight pass breakups.
