Ahead of their game against Syracuse on Thursday night, the red-hot BC women’s basketball team earned a few national honors earlier in the week.

Junior guard Dontavia Waggoner was named to NCAA.com's Starting Five after wins over then-No. 10/9 NC State and Florida State last week. The win over NC State was the program’s first win over a Top 10 team since 2010. Waggoner also won ACC Player of the Week and freshman teammate Taina Mair was named ACC Freshman of the Week.

Waggoner was named to the ‘Starting 5’ team with Adrianna Smith (Maine), Lauren Gustin (BYU), Dazia Lawrence (Charlotte), and Taylor Mikesell (Ohio State) as having the top performances from last week. Waggoner is currently the ACC steals leader and averaged 22 points, 12 rebounds, three assists, and 2.5 steals throughout both wins last week.

Waggoner is third in the country with 58 steals, while her 11-point improvement from last season is the largest in the league. She’s also just one of two players (Elizabeth Kitley - VT) with three games of a least 20 points and 10 boards in the ACC and is the only player in the country averaging at least 13.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game.

Meanwhile, Mair has flourished as the team’s point guard so far this season. Mair had 16 points, 7.5 assists, and six rebounds in the two victories over NC State and FSU. The local phenom registered her fourth double-double of the season and her fifth game with at least 10 assists in the win over NC State on Thursday. Against Florida State, 13 of her 17 points in the second half when the Eagles needed it most. Mair helped the Eagles hold FSU to a season-low 71 points and Latson to just 10 points. BC enters this week at 13-5 and a legitimate threat to beat anyone in the country on a given night. After the Syracuse game, the Eagles will be on the road to face Virginia on Sunday.
