On Monday morning, BC men’s basketball coach Earl Grant met with the media for the weekly ACC Zoom call with the media that all coaches participate in. For about 10 minutes, Grant touched on a few different things.
ON LOSSES TO WAKE FOREST AND MIAMI
“Obviously, our team has changed a lot with (Quinten Post) coming back and (Prince Aligbe) coming back. I thought in both of those games - Miami and Wake Forest - we played good portions of really good basketball, but those teams played well. They made shots. We ran into a buzzsaw, coach had them ready to play. They spread us out, they moved the ball…I was really impressed with their team. Then, Miami, we know their personnel…they were similar teams. Good guards, really spread you out, move it around and both teams shot the three well.
“With all that being said, the Miami game was a six-point game in the middle of the second half. The Wake Forest game was very close and then they went on a run and we couldn’t recover. We recovered in the second half and got it to seven and then they made another run. Both of those teams played well. We did some good things. I thought specifically in the Wake Forest game, we were a little flat after they made a big run and we didn’t recover well.”
ON QUINTEN POST OPENING UP SHOT SELECTION BEYOND THE ARC
“We’ve got to be more mature. In this last game we played three freshmen, actually, four if you include Devin McGlockton. I’ve got to be patient with these guys. I’ve got to continue to help them to grow some offensive maturity. When you’re playing with a lot of young guys, understanding controlling tempo and shot selection and all that stuff is a process. I think (Post) definitely helps us settle the game down, we can throw it inside. He and Devin McGlockton - even though Devin’s a freshman - have proven they can shoot a high percentage around the basket, so being able to get it inside…not only the fact of having him back helps us, but having him back and then adjusting to TJ Bickerstaff going back to the four, he hasn’t played any four all year, he’s played all five, In terms of tweaks in the system, same thing with Devin, he’s played all five. Now you’ve got to say, alright QP’s back, you have to be able to play some four.
“Just being able to get back to the details of executing with those guys moving around positions and putting in more interior plays for Quinten which we didn’t have…a lot of tweaks with the system…I feel like we’re in November a little bit. I feel like we’re in November in terms of our schemes and tweaks to the system because of how our team has shifted.”
ON QUINTEN POST FACING NORTH CAROLINA BIG MAN ARMANDO BACOT TUESDAY NIGHT
“Two really good players. We played against him a couple times last year and they battled. I think the biggest thing is just making sure…try to limit his deep post touches. He’s a load, he’s big, he’s efficient. If we can get him to catch it outside of the block, that's a good start right there. We’ve got to support (Post), we’ve got to try to not force him to be 1-on-1 with him all night down on the low block, we’ve got to support him from the perimeter and then we’ve got to do a gOOD job of walling up, not fouling and putting him on the free throw line.”
ON THE YOUNG GUYS PROGRESSING AND GOING THROUGH GROWING PAINS
“The teaching is exciting. It’s exciting, but at the same time, you’ve got to go through some of these games with these players and they’re growing up. They’re leaning on the job, on job training. So, it is exciting, I like our young guys, but it is a process to get them to understand what it takes to win at this level.”
