Eagles Fall Just Short

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Freshman Olivier Hanlan scored a game-high 17 points as Boston College lost to Miami, 60-59, on Wednesday night at Conte Forum.

The Eagles had a chance to tie the game at the end of regulation as Hanlan went to the free throw line for three shots with half a second remaining. He connected on the first two before hitting the front rim on the final attempt.

Hanlan also had four rebounds and four assists. Sophomore Lonnie Jackson knocked down four 3-pointers and had 16 points, and classmate Ryan Anderson totaled 11 points and six rebounds.

Boston College has lost its three ACC games by a combined nine points. It also lost to NC State (78-73) and at Wake Forest (75-72).

After Hanlan opened the second half with a three-point play, Miami responded with a 10-0 run to take a 36-31 lead just under five minutes into the half. BC then responded with 11 unanswered points to claim a 42-36 edge at the 12:11 mark. During the run, Jackson and sophomore Patrick Heckmann connected on 3-pointers, and Hanlan converted on another three-point play.

BC took a 49-42 advantage - its largest lead of the game - with just over seven minutes remaining when Jackson nailed another triple. From there, Miami used a 14-6 spurt to gain a 56-55 lead with 1:34 left in the game. The lead was the Hurricanes first since the 13:04 mark in the second half.

With 1:06 left, Jackson knocked down two free throws to give the Eagles a 57-56 lead. Miami's Durand Scott made two pairs of free throws inside the last 30 seconds to put the Hurricanes up 60-57 with 10.6 seconds to go.

On the game's last possession, Hanlan drew contact from Scott to go to the line for three free throws. He made the first two, but came up short on the third and time expired.

Scott led Miami (13-3, 4-0 ACC) with 15 points while Kenny Kadji (14 points) and Trey McKinney Jones (11 points) also scored in double-figures.

Boston College (9-8, 1-3 ACC) returns to the court at Maryland on January 22 at 9 p.m. (ESPNU).
