Boston College junior linebacker JoLonn Dunbar has been named Division 1-A National Defensive Player of the Week by the Walter Camp Foundation and also received ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week honors following his performance in BC's 38-16 win over No. 21 Maryland this past Saturday.
Dunbar became only the fourth player in NCAA history to return two fumbles for touchdowns in the same game. In addition to returning fumbles 14 and 38 yards for touchdowns in the first four minutes of the game against the Terps, the Syracuse, N.Y. junior also had a career-high 14 tackles, nine of those solos. He has been nominated for the Cingular All-America Player of the Week Award.
The ACC also announced that, for the third time this season, BC quarterback Matt Ryan has been named Offensive Back of the Week. Ryan completed 19 of 29 passes for 249 yards and two touchdowns Saturday. The Exton, Pa., junior leads the ACC in total offense (252.6) and over his last four games has completed 66 percent of his passes for 1,132 yards and five touchdowns.
