Well before his recruitment soared, Bethel (Va.) four-star defensive tackle Ricky Walker received his first offer, from Virginia Tech.
After a stellar junior season, impressive performances at spring and summer camps and at times a dominating force during his senior season, Walker is now among the top rated players in the country, at No. 216 in the Rivals250, the No. 19 defensive tackle and No. 8 player in Virginia.
And after a weekend official visit, Walker has a new home for his talents. This morning, while still on his official visit to Virginia Tech, Walker gave his pledge to the Hokies. He announced the decision via Twitter:
Walker becomes the jewel of Virginia Tech's class so far for 2014, which now has 21 commitments. Walker's pledge also boosts the Hokies to No. 19 in Rivals.com's team rankings for the class of 2014.
Before giving his commitment, Walker also strongly considered Nebraska, Penn State and Pittsburgh. He officially visited the Corn Huskers Sept. 13 for their game against UCLA.
With the loss of senior defensive tackle Derrick Hopkins after this season, as well as the loss of defensive ends James Gayle and J.R. Collins, Walker's addition is especially an important one. Virginia Tech will now set its sights on Rivals100 defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi, who is also strongly considering the Hokies.
Assistant coach Cornell Brown recruited Walker and was the one who made the biggest impression on Walker. The four-star defensive tackle told HokieHaven.com a few weeks ago, "Coach Brown, he gives me a motivational speech just about every morning before he goes out for practice. He tells me, go get it, today's the day, that the Hokies are always wanting me and thinking about me. I receive mail every day from all the coaches on the staff. I just have a good relationship with them."
Per NCAA rules, Walker cannot speak on the record while on his visit. HokieHaven.com will have plenty more coming on Walker's commitment and what it means to the Hokies.
