IMG 7-on-7 Championship notebook

BRADENTON, Fla. -- The first day of the 2013 IMG 7-on-7 National Championship featured plenty of big plays on the field and plenty of big news off it. Rivals.com Southeast analyst Woody Wommack breaks down some of the biggest recruiting news from the event's first day.

Rivals100 athlete Bo Scarbrough has long been an Alabama commit but it looks as if Florida is trying its hardest to get back in the mix. Scarborough stopped by Gainesville on Friday with 7-on-7 teammates Racean Thomas and C'yontai Lewis for an unofficial visit. He added on Saturday that he plans on going back to Florida next month for its annual "Friday Night Lights" recruiting camp.

Thomas is another in-state prospect the Tide are hoping to land and he said Saturday that Auburn, Alabama and Florida State are the three programs recruiting him the hardest. Thomas is tight with Auburn offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee, so the Tigers could have an edge but he said he's going to take trips to Alabama and Auburn again before he makes his decision.

Rivals250 wide receiver Travis Rudolph still isn't ready to cut down his list, with Auburn, Alabama, Vanderbilt, N.C. State, Tennessee, Florida and Miami pushing the hardest.

He added that in late July he plans on cutting his list down to a five or 10.

Class of 2015 linebacker Jeffrey Holland spent last week crisscrossing the country in an effort to check out as many campuses as possible. He said he visited South Carolina, North Carolina, Ohio State, Virginia Tech, Louisville and a few other campuses, but still doesn't have a leader. With plenty of time to decide, Holland said he's in no rush to trim his list any time soon.

Four-star linebacker Richard Yeargin III sounded very high on Notre Dame Saturday, after visiting South Bend last week. Yeargin also stopped in at Ohio State and said he enjoyed it, but it sounds like the Irish put themselves in a very good position. The chance to play early is very enticing to Yeargin and right now it sounds like the Irish could offer one of the best possibilities come fall 2014.

Class of 2015 strongside defensive end Byron Cowart was at the event playing linebacker and spoke highly of Florida after visiting the Gators campus last week. Cowart earned defensive line MVP honors at the Orlando Rivals Camp and has since seen his recruiting explode, with offers from Alabama, Florida and several other schools. He recently visited Florida and enjoyed it and said he's going to make an effort to reach out to more coaches, with Alabama being the top school he hopes to connect with soon.

Rivals100 linebacker Clifton Garrett also stopped by Florida and he walked away from the visit very impressed. Garrett said he loved being able to talk to Coach Will Muschamp in person and enjoyed the trip so much so that he's planning to come back for an official visit this fall. Garrett said his current top five in no order is Florida, LSU, USC, Ole Miss and Tennessee, but right now isn't sure when he's going to cut down his list.

Rivals250 defensive back Quincy Wilson recently visited Ohio State and Notre Dame and came away impressed with both. Even though his father played at Miami, it's looking more and more like Wilson will land in the Midwest. Wilson has regular contact with Buckeyes Coach Urban Meyer, and coaching stability is a factor for Wilson and his family.

Rivals100 wide receiver Ermon Lane has scrapped his visit plans for USC and it's looking more and more like it could come down to Florida and Alabama for his services.

Lane said he'll be visiting the Gators next month for Friday Night Lights and is also hoping to get to Alabama for a visit.

Class of 2015 wide receiver George Campbell spent Saturday turning heads while playing defensive back and wasn't letting his wardrobe tip off his recruiting favorite. He sported Alabama, Florida State, USF and Michigan gear and said that none of his clothing should be used to interpret his favorites. He's been in regular contact with Florida and is planning on attending Friday Night Lights next month.

Campbell's high school teammate, Rivals100 wide receiver Artavis Scott said Clemson continues to make the strongest push for his services. Scott visited Clemson last week and raved about the Tigers and their coaching staff. Other schools in the mix right now are Ohio State, Michigan, Oregon, Florida and Miami. He added that for him it's still early and he's not ready to name any favorites and he's not sure when he's going to decide.

Rivals250 defensive back Duke Dawson said he's still solidly committed to Florida but is planning on taking a visit to Alabama later this summer. Dawson has maintained that if the Tide offered he would take a visit and last month Alabama finally pulled the trigger.

Three-star safety Davin Pierce said he's close to committing and right now it looks like West Virginia could be in the best position. Pierce is planning to visit next month and if all goes well the Mountaineers could seal the deal. Pierce said he's also hearing a lot from Louisville and might take a visit in future.

Class of 2015 safety Shawn Burgess-Becker said he's planning on taking grips to Georgia, LSU and Alabama this summer, but still doesn't have a favorite. The Tide were the first school to offer so they might have a slight edge, but right now Burgess-Becker said he's still in the information gathering phase of his recruitment and is happy to hear from as many schools as possible right now.
