Scrimmage Recap: Offense

Quarterbacks

Starter Chase Rettig went 7-of-13 for 130 yards and a touchdown. Rettig's touchdown was a 50 yard pass to Bobby Swigert and was a thing of beauty. Rettig said afterwards that the defense was in a cover two, and Swigert ran a seam route down the middle of the field when he saw an opening. Rettig fired the pass right on target to Swigert in stride, and he split the safeties for a touchdown.

Rettig also ran a pretty nice two-minute drill late in the scrimmage during the situational portion. Rettig was given the ball down 8 with 3 timeouts, and the ball at his own 5 yard line with 3:38 remaining. Rettig led a 13-play, 88 yard drive, that included completions to Bobby Swigert, Brian Miller, and Colin Larmond. The completion to Larmond went for 41 yards as the wideout beat James McCaffrey deep down the left sideline. The drive stalled down at the 8 yard line, as on 4th-and-goal Rettig and freshman wideout Dan Crimmons had a miscommunication and the pass sailed out of bounds.

Backup quarterback Josh Bordner did not have his best scrimmage of the summer. The sophomore quarterback finished 4-of-10 for 36 yards and a touchdown. The highlight from Border was connecting with Johnathan Coleman at the end of the scrimmage.

Running Backs

Wednesday saw the return of running back Tahj Kimble, who returned from a deep leg bruise. Kimble had 7 carries for 26 yards.

Mike Javorski had 5 carries and carried the load for the second team offense.

Andre Williams was held out for the second straight scrimmage. Spaziani said he is healthy and it was a precautionary measure.

Wide Receivers/ Tight Ends

As described above, the best play of the day came from Swigert splitting the safeties for a 50 yard touchdown. Unfortunately, Swigert was forced to leave late in the scrimmage with a leg injury.

Colin Larmond had another nice performance as he continues to be one of the favorite targets of Rettig. Larmond seems to always find himself open along one of the sidelines.

The second unit didn't have a lot of passing yards, but when they did it usually came from a reception from Harris Jackson. The Eagles have a lot of depth at wide receiver and probably don't want to burn a year of Jackson's eligibility with limited playing time. However, if injuries force the staff to, they will probably not hesitate to throw Jackson on the field.

Spiffy Evans has had a nice camp but this was not one of his days. Evans dropped two passes, and fell down on another pass attempt which led to an incompletion.

The tight ends were quiet in this scrimmage aside from an outstanding catch from CJ Parsons. The tight end caught the ball 20 yards down the field, as he had to reach up above his head to make the catch. As soon as Parsons caught the ball he was leveled by a defender, but managed to hold onto the ball as he smacked the ground. The play ended up getting called back because of a penalty on the offense.

Offensive Line

For the 3rd straight scrimmage the first team offensive line consisted of Emmett Cleary and John Wetzel at the tackle spots, Robert Vardaro and Ian White at guard, and Andy Gallik at center. Vardaro and White did a nice job getting a push on the defensive line in this scrimmage.

The second team offensive line was:

LT- Lembke
LG- Williams
C- Gaughan
RG-Betancourt
RT- Kramer

Kramer was a standout on the line in this scrimmage.
