New coach bonding with QB recruit
Before Doug Martin starts calling the shots as BC's new offensive coordinator he's building a relationship with some recruits.
No position is more important than quarterback and that's a position Martin will have a hands-on approach to coaching.
Recently Martin has been reaching out to Christopher Laviano, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound quarterback from Hicksville (N.Y.) Holy Trinity. The junior already has an offer from Rutgers and he's hoping for more.
"Recently I visited UConn for their junior day and I thought it was nice. I got to meet their new offensive coordinator and I got to watch a little player practice they had, just to see how they venture off and do their own thing. I got to see the facilities and everything so it was just like a normal junior day."
So far Laviano has visited Rutgers, Alabama, UConn and Boston College. He told EagleAction.com that he will be attending spring practices at Alabama and Boston College this spring, so he won't be slowing down anytime soon.
Where do the Eagles stand with Laviano?
"They write me a lot and I call Coach Martin about once a week just to keep in contact," Laviano explained. "We just talk about football and how the week's going. He asks when the next time I'm going to see him will be."
Laviano attended a one-day camp at Boston College last year and he feels like he performed very well at that event. He's still waiting for an offer but the level of interest the Eagles are showing gives him hope.
"Coach Martin had seen me throw before and he tells me he likes me," he said. "They're really interested so hopefully when I go up there and meet the whole coaching staff and finally get to meet Coach Spaz it will be good. Coach Spaz has written me but we've never met."
As for favorites Laviano noted he only has one offer so Rutgers is in a strong position but it's tough to put one school ahead of the others yet.
Last year Laviano passed for 1,900 yards in 10 games.
