Spartans keep in contact with Hirschfeld
Michigan State has become very active in the state of Wisconsin since Coach Brad Salem joined the team back in 2011. Every year the Spartans have taken a step forward in recruiting there and last year it paid off big when the Spartans were able to get R.J. Shelton and Dylan Chmura from there. That gave the Spartans two of the top 6 players in Wisconsin.
For the class of 2014 the Spartans are looking at several players and Hirschfeld is at the top of the list. His size and athleticism is similar to current Spartans defensive tackle Tyler Hoover. The Spartans see Hirschfeld a as player who will likely end up being in the 290-range and have the flexibility to play every position on the defensive line.
We spoke with Hirschfeld last night and asked him about his recruitment.
"It is going well," he said. "I have gotten a few more offers. Nebraska, Iowa State and Pittsburgh have offered. I am probably going to go to a junior day at Iowa State or Cincinnati in two weeks"
As expected Michigan State is keep in frequent contact with Hirschfeld and when we spoke he indicated just that.
"Yes I speak with Michigan State often. I just talked with Coach Salem earlier today."
The Spartans have already hosted Hirschfeld on campus once and are looking forward to having him on campus again either this spring or early in the summer. The big thing that Coach Dantonio likes is building rapport with recruits and their families.
Hirschfeld is unsure about his schedule further than the next few weeks and much of that is due to his basketball schedule. Hirschfeld is a very good basketball player. He talked about his junior season on the hardwood.
"Our season went well, he stated. We ended up 20-5. Right now I am getting ready for AAU."
Some coaches would probably prefer that Hirschfeld concentrate on football, but being a two sport athlete is something that will only serve to make him better. Hirschfeld has plenty of time to add more size and strength, but the quickness and foot speed he improves playing basketball will make him a more effective football player for the future.
