Wilson winning over coaches this summer

When prospects are located at smaller schools sometimes they have to take matters into their own hands to be recruited.

That's exactly what Class 1A standout Jonathan Wilson has done. The Salem (Miss.) High School product has hit the camp scene this summer and picked up two scholarship offers for his efforts.

"I've been invited to a lot of camps because it's hard for coaches to come down there and watch us play," Wilson said. "We don't have too many big time opponents. I've got a lot to prove at these camps because everybody is at a 5A or 6A school. They are already kind of known and they look at me like who is this dude from 1A? I just have to show them who I am."

Wilson has landed offers from stops at Southern Miss and Hinds Community College so far.

"I was glad to get them," Wilson said. "I went to USM the Saturday before I came to Mississippi State on Sunday and they offered me that day after I worked out for them."

The 6-foot-7, 275-pounder attended MSU's three-day camp working on both sides of the ball as a defensive end and offensive tackle.

"It's nice out here," Wilson said. "I like coming over here. I like the coaching staff and the team. It's an SEC school and it's close to home."

Wilson was a top performer on offense and defense at the Bulldogs camp and is a rare dual threat lineman prospect. He could be on the verge of landing an offer from the Bulldogs as well.

"The Mississippi State coaches have told me that I've been moving up their board and to just keep working," Wilson said. "They said they want me to work on both sides of the ball because you never know what they might offer me as."

Last season Wilson racked up 69 tackles (52 solo, 17 assists), four sacks, one fumble recovery and blocked a field goal helping lead the Wildcats to a 4-7 record.

He is also receiving recruiting attention from Louisiana, Northwestern State, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and Ole Miss.
