Terre Haute tight end open to options

Terre Haute tight end Calvin Blank's been to a few spring practices over the last couple weeks, but he's hoping a summer schedule that includes a handful of camps will help bring in more offers.

The 6-foot-4, 226-pound tight end - he also plays defensive end at North Vigo - visited spring practices at Vanderbilt and Indiana recently, and was at Ball State last week, where he received his third offer. It joins Indiana State and Northern Illinois.

"I'm trying to get out and see what these guys are like in practice and how they interact with their players," he said of his recent trips.

But Blank's hoping to get more offers soon. This summer, he'll camp at IU, Vanderbilt, Northwestern and Purdue. He's been in West Lafayette previously, having visited for a Junior Day when he got an opportunity to tour the Boilermakers' facilities.

"They're committed to winning a Big Ten championship, a Rose Bowl championship and a national championship in every sport, with their facilities, their medical staff, their training staff," he said.

Blank says he'd like to see more of Purdue, and talks occasionally with Coach Donn Landholm.

"They're not too pushy with me in recruiting," Blank said. "It's just a conversation here or there. They want me to come to camp."

As a junior at North Vigo last season, Blank caught 30 passes for about 370 yards and eight touchdowns. A solid basketball player as well - and one of the reasons why college coaches like him as a tight end over a defensive end - Blank averaged 12 points and eight rebounds last year.

In a college, Blank says he's looking for a school's commitment to winning championships, as well as its environment. He had some thoughts on the three schools he's visited recently.

• Vanderbilt: "James Franklin came in and wanted to change the whole football program. He wanted to take it to excellent and they're doing that. They practice at a very high level. They do everything fast; it's just a good environment."

• Ball State "I didn't get to see practice, but I really like the campus and the coaching staff seems pretty straightforward, knowledgeable and intense."

• "Coach (Kevin) Wilson is a very intense individual and they got after it like a Big Ten team should."
