Jersey dual-threat has offer from Rutgers

Rutgers is the first FBS school to offer Egg Harbor City (N.J.) Cedar Creek athlete Damon Mitchell and the talented dual-threat is taking a close look at the Scarlet Knights.

Mitchell, who is listed as an athlete but played quarterback for the first time this past season, also has verbal offers from James Madison, Villanova, Bucknell and Old Dominion.

Several other schools are showing interest.

"Syracuse has just shown a lot of interest in me. They want to have me up for a camp and a junior day. I think they'll offer me if I attend some of those events," Mitchell explained.

"UConn said they really like me. They said I'm the caliber of player that can help them win a title. I look forward to seeing them this Saturday because I'll be going up there. They told me to get up there early and they'll have a word with me for about 15 minutes. They're going to talk to me and my family and I think they're going to offer.

"Georgia Tech has also shown interest in me as a quarterback."

So far Mitchell has visited Rutgers and Villanova twice.

What does he think about the Scarlet Knights?

"It was a great school. I was there in December before their bowl game against Iowa State and I went to the Syracuse (basketball) game for a junior day this Sunday that just passed.

"It was a great school and they had nice facilities and great people. It's a nice environment. They seem pretty on it with the players education-wise and their summer program lets you get college credits before the semester starts. I thought that was nice about Rutgers and Villanova, too."

There's just one hang up.

"As of right now Rutgers could be my favorite but with Greg Schiano leaving to go to the pros and Jeff Hafley leaving I don't know. I was offered by them to play safety and then the new coaching staff came in and offered me as a quarterback. I'm not sure where I would be with them. I want to be sure of the position I'll be playing."

Would Mitchell prefer to play on one side of the ball?

"I'm a competitor so I like to compete. It was only my first year playing quarterback in my life but I think my mechanics are pretty good. My release is pretty good but I need a little work. I feel like if I keep working at it I'll be able to make it with my height and size and the size I put on in college.

"I like safety too, though. You get to hit people."

Last fall Mitchell passed for 859 yards and rushed for 937. On defense he recorded 43 tackles while intercepting three passes and breaking up 12 others.
