Garden State WR hearing from BC

Charlie Calliope has put up some solid numbers as a receiver at Jersey City (N.J.) St. Peter's Prep this year and colleges are continuing to take notice. Rutgers offered Callinan an early verbal scholarship and it's a near certainty that other schools will offer him as well. caught up with the 6-foot-4, 200-pound receiver from the Garden State to find out how his season and the recruiting process are going.

Callinan, a Class of 2013 prospect, has outstanding size and runs pretty well for a recruit of his build. He's not a burner but he can get down the field and presents matchup problems.

So far this year Callinan has caught 27 passes for 460 yards and four touchdowns.

St. Peter's will be playing in the second round of the playoffs after winning their first round game last Friday.

"I've been to Rutgers once and I visited Notre Dame two weeks ago," Callinan explained.

"Rutgers was fun. I went there for the Rutgers-Navy game and I got to talk to the coaches. I already have a great relationship with them. I got to watch the team and players and since I had been there before it was really nice. It was pretty much nice just hanging out with the recruits.

"Notre Dame was really, really fun. It was my first time being there so I got the tour of the campus and facilities. I was there for their game against Navy, too. It just happened like that. I got to hang out in the locker room after the game and I talked to my recruiting coordinator.

"I thought the campus was beautiful and the facilities were amazing," Callinan said of ND.

Callinan explained that he will not take any more visits until after his season is over sometime in December.

"I'm trying to visit Michigan State, Wisconsin and maybe Michigan while I'm at Michigan State," he said. "Hopefully I'll be able to drive out to Boston College because they're pretty close, and maybe some others like Nebraska, South Carolina and West Virginia."

If Callinan visits BC the Eagles standing could dramatically improve with him.

"BC has been talking to me a lot," he said. "I've been in contact with Coach McGovern a lot. They're recruiting me heavy.

"I haven't been out there yet but I'm looking forward to going and making the trip. I've heard a lot about Boston College because some of my friends have been recruited to go there. They ended up going to different schools but they told me it's a great place and they said they thought it would be a good fit for me.

"I've heard nothing but great things about the school. Coach McGovern's a great guy. They're having a rough season but they'll probably get back on track soon."

When it comes to what Callinan is looking for in a school it sure seems like BC would be a good fit.

"I'm mostly looking for academics," he said. "That and the connections after college and how strong they are. Academics and discipline are important to me. I don't want to go to school someplace where you don't have to go to class. I want to stay in top shape and disciplined for after college. That's really big for me.

"Secondly, just the football program and the atmosphere around it. Everything like that."

Callinan already has a few favorites.

"I'd say I have seven or eight favorites right now. It would probably be Rutgers, Notre Dame, Michigan State, Wisconsin, South Carolina, Boston College, Michigan and Nebraska."
