Curious about the incoming forwards. Is there a set order we think they rank in terms of a collegiate prospect? Are Fitzgerald and cangelosi the leaders?
1/28 5:02 PM | IP: Logged
1)Austin Cangelosi-Center
2) Evan Richardson-Center
3)Ryan Fitzgerald-Right Wing
4)Adam Gilmour-Right Wing
5) Chris Calnan-Right Wing
6) Conor McGlynn-Left Wing

Cangelosi and Richardson are really dynamic players and Fitzgerald might be right there.  Gilmour and Calnan should bolster the wings with some size and speed. Gilmour comes from a higher level of competition, but Calnan may be just as good. McGlynn's production is down perhaps because his team is really bad, but has great size.  Gaudreau is going to set scoring records with either one of these top two centers.

Here are the stats:

Calnan  24G  19 A-  43 Points   (3 SHG)   Eastern Junior Hockey League
Cangelosi 11G  25A 36 Points    (2 SHG)  (1 PPG 8 PPA)  USHL
Gilmour  14G 19A   33 Points    (4 PPG and 5 PPA)  USHL
Fitzgerald  14G  16A 30 Points    (1 SHG)  EJHL and Team USA
Richardson 10G  25A  35 Points (15 PPA)  British Columbia Hockey League
McGlynn  3G  1A      4 Points   (61 Penalty minutes)  USHL

Defensemen:

MCoshen 6G 18A  24 Points  (+23)
Santini 0G 11A      11 Points
Savage 1G 5A        6 Points  (may get pushed back to 2014 as he needs to fill out)

Goaltender:
Demko  16-5   .911 Save percentage  2.14 GAA   5 Shutouts

Powerplay and Shorthanded special teams are going to be off the charts in 2013 with Gaudreau, Hayes, Arnold and the newcomers above.  Matt Gaudreau will probably join BC in 2014 to play with Johnny G.

Easy I would temper those expectations and let's see what happens when they get here. Matheson is as good as they come and while he's been good offensively he still needs a lot of work defensively. No doubt D will be good but the adjustment takes time. As far as the forwards go you can't tell anything from the EJhl. Weakest of the junior leagues. If you look at the top 23 scorers in HE only 1 forward played in the EJHL . As far as Richardson and the BCHL Straight was a star in the league and had 69 points! How's that adjustment working out. Success in the USHL translates to success in D1 hockey but it takes time. Silk played on the NTDP and is struggling offensively. While these kids may be good over time temper your expectations and give them a chance to prove themselves.

Thanks great stuff.

I assume referencing the above to be upper classmen is out of hpoe they stay not out of any inside knowledge correct?  (whether they should or not is an entirely differet argument).

Agree that their will be adjustment period with all these kids.  I did not specifically address the defensive aspect of these recruits, as that is always a work in progress.  Agree on Matheson as well.  With regard to Silk and Straight, I disagree.

Silk was injured and missed almost an entire season, before returning to play with the NTDP.  Silk was really coming on, and was doing well when Straight was injured, as he was skating with Hayes and Arnold.  When Straight returned, Silk was dropped back down a line, and his production has slowed.

Straight is not a great skater, but he has progressed with his scoring and is a good passer.  He is only a Sophomore, and Byrnes accurately told us that he would have benefited from playing one more season in the BCHL.  He needs to get stronger and work on his skating (if he can get healthy).

I agree with the weakness of the EJHL and that is why I put Calnan below these others. It is just a pure guess on my part from reading up on all these players.  Keep in mind that Chris Kreider came out of the Preps, and played pretty well for BC. Fitzgerald played with NTDP and fit right in from all reports.  He also excelled on the USA junior team that competed overseas.

I really like the point that all of these recruits have more assists than goals. To me that says a lot.

all those kids on mavs, sea caps list, are very talented high skilled kids, 2-3 may end up with long nhl careers,.some developing faster than other cause size, competiton, coaching, who they are playing with as linemates,etc..remeber JG wasnt even recruited by any schools when playing high school in jersey, competion sucked, he put up great numbers but because he was small size weight wise ,folks thought he was destined for d-3, basically had to walk on in the ushl, not many people knew about him..aftergreat camp, very quick start, albie odonnel saw the kid enough to go after him, threeweeks later he got an offer from NU, rest is history..hockeys tricky game, BC takes elite kids, high hockey iq types, that are not problems off the ice..they have other kids already lined up colin white ,dudek, hanafin, tuch, another 2-3 those kids will go on the the nhl, talent is awesome! pipeline completely loaded to the gills..the staff strengths are molding a true team with high skilled kids, not everyones gonna be top six from the get go..also there are some very gifted kids headed to nobles, dexter, etc, staff doesnt even know about them yet, i know 3 of these kids well, one is the top player for his age in  north america including canada, has nobles, BC written all over him, the rich again get richer

BC will have 11 returning forwards next year along with 6 incoming freshman forwards. My math adds that up to 17 forwards. Should be competitive.

With this list it's reasonable to expect several to come in and contribute right away.  Fitzgerald should be a very solid player from the start.  Gotta love bloodlines and the accessibility of an NHL dad to help mentor you and raise you to play the game the right way.

Well said Seacap.

Silk missed almost an entire year in his development.  Anytime you lose an entire year like that under 18 years old, your track of development is completely thrown off and blown up.  To be honest I think he's done a good job getting back on track to be a solid addition when he arrived here.

While Calnan is in the EJHL, I'm pretty sure he blew up several events at the scouting combine which tells me this staff has something great to work with and mold into an even better player.  It certainly didn't hurt Dumoulin playing there but obviously it is a lower league.  USHL is the best way to go from a development standpoint.

We'll see what happens.  Fitzgerald will be great from the get go for the Eagles.

It really is a great unknown as to what these kids are gonna do. The reason I was curious about how they compare to one another is because of Straight's slower development than some may have thought. That's why I'm thinking maybe Richardson won't be as good as we think.

my concern/question is how many of them will actually be there in september?

Here's a list of the top 50 NHL draft prospects from CBS: http://www.cbssports.com/nhl/blog/eye-on-hockey/21612960/2013-nhl-draft-prospects-big-board-seth-jones-is-no-1

They have Santini 28, Ryan Fitzgerald at 36, and McCoshen 38

With respect to this blogger, Ryan Fitzgerald is nowhere near 6' 2".  He is about 5' 8" and will not likely get drafted in the 2nd round at that size.

There is no way Ryan is 5'8" unless his father is also 5'8" (which he is not).

5'9.5" according to one NHL scouting list.

He had a great fall:

American Ryan Fitzgerald, who hails from the Boston area and is the son of former NHL player Tom Fitzgerald,
is climbing the charts. Hot off his MVP recognition at the recently
held USA prospects game last month, the forward was again impressive.

F Ryan Fitzgerald

Fitzgerald continues to show he is a player on the rise with signs of
elite hockey sense. He is not blessed with size, but really competed in
his one-on-one battles, often winning and making things happen. He is
certainly no longer an unknown player around NHL circles, and he's not
showing many poor traits in front of a high number of NHL team scouts
present in the stands. One of his more noticeable assets is his shot.

Fitzgerald is my bet for the best forward of next years class.  He looked about the size of Brian Gibbons, both height and build, in the prospects game last fall
