Eagles Drop to 0-3
The Eagles held an eight point lead with just 4:00 remaining in the game. After Toledo had cut the BC lead to three, Patrick Heckmann drove from the wing to underneath the hoop and made a flying pass to Joe Rahon who was wide open in the corner for three. The teams traded some free throws back and forth and BC was able to extend its lead.
It was all downhill in the last 4:00 though. Toledo ended the game on a 21-10 run and did not go a single possession without scoring at least a point. BC's execution on the offensive end slowed down in the last few minutes. Coach Steve Donahue was asked after the game if his team was pressing too hard when things got rough.
"I don't think they know how to channel it. There s tightness about us. I try to say the right words. But once again it's me. I've got to do a better job," said Steve Donahue.
What Went Right
BC's offense continues to score at a rapid rate. The Eagles shot 51% from the field and 82.5% from the free throw line. The offense is clearly not the problem with the team right now.
What Went Wrong
There's no way to be nice about it the defense, it was atrocious for much of the game. The Toledo players had no problems driving to the hoop at will and were usually not met with any kind of help defense. The Rockets shot 57% from the floor in the game with almost all of their field goals coming as two point shots. Toledo made only two three pointers the entire game, so it wasn't like they were hot from the outside or something.
Like the first two games, rebounding was also a big issue. The difference this time is that Toledo is not known for being a great rebounding team like Providence or UMass. If anything, the Rockets were actually a little smaller than BC. The Rockets outrebounded the Eagles by 4 and took advantage of several 2nd chance opportunities. In the last 5:15, Toledo scores 5 points off of offensive rebounds.
Toledo guard Justin Drummond---who had 5 rebounds of his own--- said that his team was more athletic than BC and that's how they gained a rebounding edge.
The Eagles had trouble executing their offense very late in the game. Over the last 3:00, BC shot 1-of-3 from the field and committed two turnovers.
This game was obviously a game that the Eagles had to have and they let the game get away late. It was surprising that the team couldn't shake off the run by Toledo late in the game and regroup.
