BLACKSBURG, Va. - Sophomore Ryan Anderson led three Boston College scorers in double figures with 26 points as the Eagles defeated Virginia Tech at Cassell Coliseum, 86-75, Wednesday night.
Anderson went 11-for-17 from the field and grabbed nine rebounds. Freshman Olivier Hanlan was all over the court. He had 17 points, eight rebounds, five steals and four assists. Sophomore Lonnie Jackson had a season-high 22 points - 19 in the second half - to go along with seven rebounds. He was 5-for-8 from beyond the arc and 7-for-12 from the foul line. Freshman Joe Rahon had nine points and six assists.
The Boston College defense forced 17 turnovers while the offense gave it away just five times. The Eagles had a 29-0 advantage in points off turnovers. BC dished out a total of 17 assists (tied season high) and its five turnovers were a season low.
The first half was fairly tight the entire way as both teams led by as much as six points. Virginia Tech held its six-point lead with 5:35 left in the half when Erick Green hit a jumper to make it a 23-17 game. Boston College ended the half on a 15-3 run to take a 32-26 lead into the locker rooms. The Hokies' Will Johnston hit a 3-pointer at the 3:57 mark but those were the only points they could muster in the last 5:34. Hanlan had six points in the run.
The Eagles continued to build their lead in the second half, starting on a 10-4 run that increased the advantage to 42-30. BC maintained the double-digit cushion until the 12:45 mark when Virginia Tech began a 9-2 run to cut the deficit to 53-49 near the midpoint of the half.
BC led, 67-62, at the 4:29 mark before it made its final push. A quick 6-1 run put the lead back to 10, 73-63, and the Eagles hit their foul shots down the stretch to keep Virginia Tech at bay.
Green led the Hokies (9-6, 0-2 ACC) with 24 points and nine assists. Jarell Eddie had 21 points and six rebounds.
BC (9-6, 1-1 ACC) is back in action on Saturday when it takes on Wake Forest in Winston-Salem at 4 p.m.
