Eagles Fall to 'Pack
Dennis Clifford hit the first three of his career to tie the game at 21. Unfortunately for the Eagles, that was the last good news that they had for a while. BC went ice cold on offense for a span of MINUTES, in what amounted to a combination of bad decisions and bad execution. Matt Humphrey air balled a three early in the shot clock, and Ryan Anderson made a telegraphed pass which both led the Wolfpack hoops, and all of a sudden the Eagles were down 6. Shortly after, Lonnie Jackson got the ball stolen from him at half court, and NC State was off to the races again. Jackson ran back on defense only to foul Howell, and after the and-one, NC State went up 30-21. When it was all said and done, the Wolfpack went on a 15-0 run, to go up 36-21.
What Went Right
Things were going a little rocky early on BC came out of the gates a little sluggish on offense, which led to some transition hoops for NC State, who took a quick 15-5 lead in the game. You figured with the home crowd rocking that the young Eagles might fall out of the game right off the bat, but that's not how it played out.
Ryan Anderson scored a couple of buckets as he did a terrific job of getting open inside the paint for buckets. In the span of a minute, the Eagles went on a 6-0 run and got right back in the game.
What Went Wrong
Some of NC State's baskets were just simply plays where their players were just bigger and more skilled than BC's players, and that's just something that you have to live with as this young team develops. However, what BC coach Steve Donahue can't live with his players making multiple mental mistakes and turnovers on the offensive end, which result in fast break points for their opponent. Especially when their opponent thrives on playing transition offense.
The Wolfpack scored 27 of their76 points on the fast break, compared with BC's 11 fast break points.
Three Stars of the Game
1. Dennis Clifford- Clifford was the only BC player who reached double digits (12 points), and also had a team high 5 rebounds. This was hardly Clifford's best game of late as he was a little careless with the ball (5 turnovers).
2. Jordan Daniels- In a game where BC committed 17 turnovers, their point guard committed only 1 of them. Daniels finished with 9 points.
3. Ryan Anderson- Anderson paced the Eagles early with a couple of buckets. Unfortunately, that's where his production stopped as he finished with only 7 points.
It's pretty amazing that this is the same NC State team that fluffed their way to a 5-11 record in the ACC last season.
