September 16, 2011At 6-foot-5 and 255-pounds, junior defensive end Andrew Bartolomei of Norcross (Ga.) Greater Atlanta Christian has managed to stay under the radar up to this point. However, with serious interest now coming from several BCS programs, including Boston College, Bartolomei's name will not be a secret for too much longer.
Bartolomei, 6-foot-5 and 255-pounds, may be new to the recruiting world, but Boston College has been in touch since the spring.
"Coach Siravo came to watch spring football and Boston College has recently invited me to any and all the home games, if I get the chance to come up," said Bartolomei. "I know BC is a great school academically and has a rich football tradition. My dad was born in Massachusetts and I have family that live up there."
Bartolomei has tried to maintain contact with Coach Siravo since the spring.
"I met him briefly at school during the spring and since September 1st I think I've almost gotten a letter a day from him," said Bartolomei. "He has also befriended me on Facebook as well. I've tried to call a couple of times with no luck so far."
Bartolomei has yet to visit Chestnut Hill, but he is hoping to change that in the near future.
"Hopefully if things go right we will try to go to the BC game against NC State on November 12th," said Bartolomei, who has no other visits planned at this time, but discussed what he will look for in a program when he does take visits. "I'm still not sure what size school I'd like to attend, so I'd like to get comfortable with the campus and environment first. Academics will play a major role in my decision too. I'd also like to get to know the position and head coach to get a better understanding of what kind of player they are looking for. Great facilities wouldn't hurt either."
Aside from BC, a number of other schools are also beginning to step forward.
"BYU and NC State have sent multiple letters and I attended three camps over the summer at Tennessee, Georgia Tech and Florida State," said Bartolomei. "I thought they went pretty well."
At his size, Bartolomei has the potential to play a few positions, and at this point he is keeping an open mind.
"Right now I'm being recruited as a defensive lineman/defensive end, but that could easily change depending on how much I grow over the next 12-18 months," said Bartolomei. "I'm open to other positions, to be the best fit for the right team."
On the field, Bartolomei and his teammates are off to a quick start.
"I play defensive tackle/end and on offense I back up Chase Roberts at left tackle," said Bartolomei. "Things are going pretty well. We are 3-0 and play this Saturday in the Georgia Dome against Westminster. I was featured in the Gwinnett Daily Post this past week for defensive honorable mention with 10 tackles, two sacks and a quarterback pressure."
