WR Smith ready to make his choice
One of the top wide receiver prospects in the Midwest for the class of 2012 is Corey Smith of Akron Buchtel High School. The 6-foot-0, 170-pound Smith has over 20 scholarship offers and is closing in on making his college choice. SpartanMag.com was able to speak with smith and get some details.
Michigan State University was one of the first schools to offer Smith almost a year ago. Smith came up to the Michigan State Elite Player Camp last July and had a very strong performance. Shortly afterwards he was offered a scholarship by the Spartans. He was also on campus last fall to check out the Spartans defeat the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.
Since that time, Smith has seen his scholarship offer list expand greatly and he is now looking to end the process and select as school. SpartanMag.com talked with him about that.
"I think I am going to make my decision next week," he said. I am going to select a school based on the academics, playing time and good coaches."
As far as a favorite school, Smith was not giving up and insight. However, the general consensus is that his top schools are Michigan State, Penn State, Tennessee, West Virginia, North Carolina and Illinois, in no particular order.
Smith informed SpartanMag.com about his recent contact with schools and if he will be having any type of press conference for making his choice.
"I went to North Carolina and Tennessee this spring," he said. "Lots of coaches have been by school the past few weeks. Coach Narduzzi from Michigan State was in the other week. I will probably just call the coaches and let them know about my decision."
Smith has been working hard in the off-season to make himself a better player. In addition to his workouts, he also has been hitting camps and combines. He was at the Penn State NIKE Camp a few weeks ago and was one of the top performers there. He will be attending the Ohio State NIKE Camp on May 21st and will be looking to take home the MVP honors for top wide receiver.
Smith talked working hard to improve himself.
"You get out what you put in, so I have been giving football my all," he stated. "When I am sitting at home I always try and think to myself about what I can do to make myself a better player. That is what motivates me."
Smith indicated that he is looking forward to having a big senior season for Buchtel High. Under the direction of Head Coach Ricky Powers, Buchtel High School has returned to the ranks of one of the top programs in Ohio. Last year they made it all the way to the state finals before losing a heartbreaker to Bishop Watterson High School by a score of 13-12.
SpartanMag.com will be covering the Ohio State NIKE Camp on May 21st. It is possible the Smith will have made his choice just prior to that event. We will be sure to report on how he performs against the best competition in the Midwest and what his new team can expect from this talented player.
